***
This is Hedgehog.
She wasn’t always called Hedgehog; people started calling her this because she lives in hedges and snuffles like a hog.
Her original name was “Urchin” (which has helped named the Sea Urchin).
Her snout sticks out quite far so she can smell and forage for her favourite foods - insects, caterpillars, worms and yummy berries.
She can wonder for 2 miles a night to find food!
And when she does find food she likes, she covers herself in foamy saliva; this is called self anointing. She won’t say why she does this though, although it could be to change the way she smells.
What she doesn’t like though, is Milk! She is lactose intolerant and milk can make her extremely poorly.
Hedgehog is a solitary soul. She likes to spend time by herself, and it’s unusual for her to be an “array” of hedgehogs.
In her solitary times, she likes to count her spikes - she has over 5000 of them on her body!
She can raise and lower them in response to any threats. Each spike will last a year before falling out and regrowing.
She wasn't sure at first when I said I wanted to paint her portrait, but now she loves all these prints.
