This is Badger.
 
His name comes from the French word 'bêcheur' which means 'digger'. So called because he uses his strong front paws to dig for food and to maintain his beautiful home, called a 'sett'.
 
His favourite meal is scrumptious earthworms, which make up around 80% of his diet. He will also demolish several hundred worms each night too!
 
But he’s really not fussy. Being omnivorous, he will eat almost anything, from flesh and fruit to bulbs and birds' eggs.
 
Although he loves to eat a lot,he won’t bring any food into his sett - he doesn’t want to get crumbs all over the place and make it dirty.
 
In fact, he is so clean, he won’t even have a toilet in his sett - he’d rather use a communal loo away from home.
 
He shares this with other members of the badger “clan”.
 
Badger likes to boast that he’s the UK’s largest land predictor, and that he can run up to 19mph when he wants to.
 
However, he does need to be careful…45,000 - 50,000 badgers are killed on British roads every year.
 
It’s interesting to know that killing a badger will get you 6 months in prison and an unlimited fine.
 
The same goes if you intentionally injure or capture one, or even if you damage, destroy or block access to their setts. So it’s good that Badger is so protected.
